Women’s Coalition Against Cancer (WOCACA) is urging society to work together in creating a more equitable and accessible cancer care system for all.
This call comes as today Malawi joins the world in commemorating World Cancer Day, under the theme “United by Unique.”
In an interview with Capital FM, WOCACA Executive Director Maud Mwakasungula emphasized the need for better healthcare policies that will ensure early detection and treatment services.
Mwakasungula explained that the theme powerfully places individuals at the centre of cancer care, recognizing the unique experiences and stories of each person affected by this disease.
“Every person’s journey with cancer is unique, shaped by individual circumstances, background, type of cancer, and access to care. Therefore, the theme highlights the importance of personalized care, tailored to the specific needs of each patient,” she said.
The health advocate also called for a lifestyle shift that could potentially reduce the risk of cancer by 50 percent.
This includes avoiding tobacco and alcohol, limiting processed and high-calorie foods, consuming more fruits and vegetables, staying physically active, and staying up to date with vaccinations.
