The Malawi Women’s National Football Team has qualified for the next round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers following the withdrawal of the Congolese Women’s National Team.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that the Congolese Football Federation officially withdrew from the qualifiers due to a lack of competitions and preparation.

This means that Malawi, popularly known as the Scorchers, will automatically advance to the next stage.

The Scorchers were initially scheduled to face Congo on 20th February 2025 at home, with the return leg set for 25th February 2025 away.

However, with Congo pulling out, Malawi will now wait to play the winner between Zimbabwe and Angola in the next round, scheduled for October later this year.

Despite the automatic qualification, FAM remains committed to keeping the team in top shape.

The association has confirmed that the national team’s camping programme will proceed as planned, with efforts underway to secure friendly matches to make full use of the upcoming FIFA Window.

“Further details regarding the team’s preparations and upcoming fixtures will be communicated in due course,” reads a communique from FAM.
