NGORA issues final warning to non-compliant NGOs

Chileka Banda: By publishing the names of compliant NGOs, we believe this will serve as a stronger reminder to those yet to act. Previously, we did the opposite

The NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA) has issued a final warning to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Malawi without proper registration and licensing.

This follows a directive issued in November last year, reminding NGOs of their obligation to register and obtain licenses by the NGO Act of 2022.

According to NGORA chief executive officer, Edward Chileka Banda, some organizations have yet to comply by registering, acquiring licenses, and submitting audited financial accounts.

“As of the end of last year, 553 out of 1,155 NGOs had submitted their technical reports and audited financial accounts, representing a 60 percent compliance rate. Those that have declared their audited accounts collectively spent about 734 billion kwacha,” said Banda.

He further revealed that his office will publish the names of all NGOs that have complied with the directive, as a way of reinforcing the requirement for those still lagging.

“By publishing the names of compliant NGOs, we believe this will serve as a stronger reminder to those yet to act. Previously, we did the opposite,” Banda added.

NGORA has set March 31 as the final deadline for non-compliant NGOs to register and obtain licenses. Failure to do so will result in deregistration.

So far, 121 NGOs have complied with the directive—55 have registered, 11 have renewed their licenses, and 167 out of 1,155 have already secured licenses for the year 2025.
