Austin: The fashion industry in Malawi is still developing

Fashion industry players are optimistic that Malawi can gain global exposure if more investment is directed into the sector.
According to Lucky Austin, Executive Director of Umodzi Designs, the industry has grown significantly in recent years, with more people embracing fashion design.
He believes this progress presents an opportunity for Malawi to establish itself on the global fashion stage.
However, Austin points out key challenges, including delayed payments and difficult clients, which hinder profitability and make it tough for designers to sustain their businesses.
“The fashion industry in Malawi is still developing, but it is expanding quickly. There is great potential for Malawian fashion to be recognized internationally,” he said.
Industry stakeholders emphasize that with proper investment and exposure, Malawi’s fashion sector could position itself as a competitive player in the global market.
