Malawian students in Türkiye, under their association Malawian Scholars in Türkiye (MAST), have pledged to promote stronger bilateral relations between Malawi and Türkiye.

The commitment was made during the opening day of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Antalya, Türkiye’s renowned tourism capital.

Speaking at the event, MAST Head of Communications, Bright Malenga, emphasized the potential benefits for Malawi in strengthening ties with Türkiye.

“Türkiye is an advanced country with expertise in education, health, science, technology, and innovation. Strengthening relations with Türkiye could offer Malawi immense opportunities for growth in these sectors,” Malenga stated.

He further noted that Malawi, in turn, has much to offer Türkiye, particularly in investment, construction, and manufacturing.

“Türkiye has been expanding its presence across Africa, with many of its companies securing contracts in construction and infrastructure development.

Turkish investors are known for prioritizing quality and long-term development. Strengthening our relationship would be mutually beneficial,” he added.

Malenga also urged the Malawian government to establish embassies in both Lilongwe and Ankara to enhance diplomatic ties and create more opportunities for Malawian students and professionals.

“The Turkish government offers numerous scholarships, yet the number of Malawian students benefiting from these programs remains low compared to other African nations such as South Africa, Zambia, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

This is because their governments have established stronger diplomatic engagements with Türkiye. Malawi should follow suit to unlock similar opportunities,” he explained.

The two-day AGM, which commenced on February 1st, concludes today, February 2nd.

The event, officially opened by MAST President Bahat Innocent Issah, has gathered Malawian students and residents in Türkiye to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two nations.
