MDF repatriates eight Ethiopian nationals amid human trafficking concerns

Mlelemba: We are looking at national security, and national security does not depend on only one organ

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has confirmed the repatriation of eight Ethiopian nationals due to suspected involvement in human trafficking activities.

In collaboration with other security agencies, MDF facilitated the deportation of the suspects via Kamuzu International Airport as part of efforts to curb illegal immigration.

Confirming the development to Capital FM, MDF Spokesperson Major Emmanuel Mlelemba stated that the individuals were among 220 people apprehended in July last year at Dzaleka Refugee Camp for lacking valid immigration permits.

“Some months ago, we raided the camp and arrested several illegal immigrants as well as human traffickers,” he explained.

Mlelemba added that the illegal immigrants were sent to Maula Prison, while the human traffickers remained under MDF custody for specific security reasons.

He commended the collaboration between MDF and other security agencies, emphasizing its importance in addressing national security concerns.

“We are looking at national security, and national security does not depend on only one organ,” he added.
