Illovo assures public of adequate sugar supply amid rationing concerns

Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc has assured the public that it has sufficient sugar stocks to meet local demand, which stands at 17,000 metric tons per month.

The company reports having approximately 80,000 metric tons of sugar in stock—significantly higher than the 29,000 metric tons recorded during the same period last year.

Despite this, concerns have emerged over rationing by some retail stores, notably Sana Cash and Carry, where customers have been restricted from purchasing more than five packets at a time.

Illovo Sugar Malawi Managing Director, Kondwani Msimuko, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to meeting domestic demand.

“Over the past three years, our production was affected by climate change and cyclones, leading to shortages. However, we are now on a positive trajectory, and we have enough sugar for the local market,” said Msimuko.

Meanwhile, Trade Minister Sosten Gwengwe, during a visit to Illovo’s Dwangwa factory, echoed similar sentiments.

“Sugar is available in all Illovo factories. For instance, here at Dwangwa, they have about 15,000 metric tons compared to just 3,000 metric tons during the same period last year. We believe some distributors are deliberately manipulating the market to create panic and profit, as was the case last year when sugar was scarce,” said Gwengwe.
