Cane growers threaten vigil at Capital Hill over delayed Sugar Bill

Dziweni (L) delivering the petition to Kamba
The Cane Growers Association of Malawi has threatened to hold a vigil at Capital Hill if authorities fail to table the long-awaited Sugar Bill within two weeks.
The bill, once enacted, aims to protect cane growers from exploitation by sugar milling companies and transporters while ensuring fair profits for farmers.
President of the Sugarcane Growers Association of Malawi, Robert Dziweni, made the remarks while presenting a petition on the bill in Chikwawa district.
Dziweni stated that they have been pleading with various stakeholders, including the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade, but have only been met with false assurances.
“We have been advocating for this bill for over four years because we believe it will help mitigate sugar scarcity,” said Dziweni.
Additionally, he emphasized his strong desire for the bill to be tabled and passed, as it would bring several benefits to the industry.
The petition was presented to Chikwawa District Commissioner Nardin Kamba, who pledged to forward it to the relevant authorities.
