Mulunguzi dam faces water crisis as levels drop by 30%

Mulunguzi dam water levels drop by 30%
Zomba’s Mulunguzi Dam, a water source for the district, is facing a crisis as water levels have dropped by 30% due to deforestation and other environmental factors.
The alarming situation was revealed during a visit by Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, who inspected the dam and other Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) projects, including the establishment of new offices aimed at reducing rental costs.
According to SRWB Chief Executive Officer, Duncan Chambamba, reduced water inflow from the river is posing a threat to water distribution in the district.
Chambamba stated that SRWB is working with community members to plant more trees around the dam to restore its natural capacity and ensure a stable water supply for Zomba residents.
He further disclosed that discussions are underway with the Malawi Defense Force to enhance security and prevent indiscriminate tree-cutting in the catchment area.
Meanwhile, Minister Abida Mia pledged the government’s support in restoring the dam, assuring that the board will receive the necessary assistance.
