MRA suspends officers over alleged misconduct

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has suspended several employees over misconduct allegations, pending further investigations.
According to an internal administrative notice dated January 20, 2025, the suspended officers include Deputy Commissioner for Domestic Taxes Technical Ralph Banda and Manager for Domestic Taxes Technical Enock Hapala.
Both are accused of conducting tax appeal hearings in violation of legal provisions.
Other suspended officers include Finance Officer Rodgers Mapando, accused of reporting to work intoxicated, and Driver Dennis Chitekwe alleged to have refused to carry out official duties.
Additionally, Revenue Officers Emily Aironi and Agatha Alexander are accused of demanding money from taxpayers in exchange for reducing their tax liabilities.
MRA management has clarified that the suspensions do not imply guilt but are intended to facilitate thorough investigations in line with the authority’s Disciplinary and Grievance Handling Code.
The authority has urged all staff members to cooperate with ongoing investigations.
