In a historic move, Thailand has become one of the few nations in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.
The legislation legalizing the act was passed by the Thai parliament yesterday following years of advocacy and public support for marriage equality.
According to BBC reports, the new law grants same-sex couples the same legal rights and recognition as heterosexual couples, including rights related to inheritance, adoption, and spousal benefits.
This positions Thailand as a leader in LGBTQ+ rights within Asia, a continent where such legal recognitions remain limited.
Reuters reports show that couples across the country celebrated by participating in vibrant wedding ceremonies adorned with traditional Thai elements and a riot of colors.
For example In Bangkok, the capital city, numerous couples exchanged vows in public parks, temples, and community centers, surrounded by family, friends, and supporters.
One couple, Somchai and Niran, who have been together for over a decade, told the BBC that they are excited with the new law.
“We have waited so long for this day. It’s a dream come true to finally have our love recognized legally in our own country.”
Meanwhile, the United Nations has issued a statement congratulating Thailand on its progress, saying it is vital in quest for promotion of equal rights for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation.
However, some conservative groups have voiced opposition, citing cultural and religious beliefs.
In response, government spokesperson Anurak Chaiyapat stated, “This legislation is about ensuring equal rights for all Thai citizens. We respect diverse opinions, but the core principle is equality under the law.”
The LGBTQIA+ remains debatable globally with some opposing its existence while others conform to it.
