Mutharika: This is a moment to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the trials we have endured together

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president, Peter Mutharika, has called for decisive leadership to address the pressing challenges Malawians face, including hunger, economic struggles, and what he described as a “failed governance system.”

Speaking during a televised address, Mutharika accused the current administration of making inconsiderate decisions that have exacerbated the country’s plight.

“Malawians can’t breathe,” he said.

“We could do better than the current situation.”

Mutharika also condemned the recent arrests of senior DPP members, labeling them politically motivated. He warned that such actions are placing Malawi’s democracy at risk.

“Malawi is now a police state. This government is oppressing its opponents,” he said. “Help is on the way. Freedom is within reach. We should not allow oppression to silence us. Let us vote decisively.”

The former Malawi leader also dismissed any possibility of the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rigging the upcoming presidential election scheduled for September this year.

The former president expressed confidence in his party’s efforts to safeguard the votes of Malawians and said the DPP has put mechanisms in place to ensure electoral integrity.

“The hunger, economic struggles, and other challenges have eroded people’s trust in the current administration,” he said.

Mutharika urged Malawians to remain resolute in their quest for change and emphasized the need for a united front in defending democracy.

There has not been immediate comment from the government and governing MCP on the matter.
