MEC unveils supplementary voter registration schedule

Mtalimanja (C): It is not an extension

Yesterday, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced that supplementary voter registration for the September 16, 2025, general elections will be conducted from January 21 to February 3, 2025.

This process is being carried out in compliance with a High Court order addressing challenges faced by eligible voters who were unable to register in the initial phases due to issues with national IDs.

During a press briefing in Blantyre, MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja emphasized that this exercise is not an extension of the previous registration but is a targeted effort to assist those who faced barriers.

Specifically, the exercise will benefit individuals registered with the National Registration Bureau (NRB) between October 21, 2024, and January 4, 2025, but who were unable to register as voters because of delays in receiving unique ID numbers.

Mtalimanja reiterated that individuals already registered as voters should not attempt to register again, as this constitutes a criminal offense. Instead, those who have moved to a different area should wait for the voter transfer window to update their polling center.

The supplementary voter registration will be conducted in three phases. Phase 1 will take place on January 21 and 22, covering M’mbelwa (Mzimba), Lilongwe, Lilongwe City, Mangochi, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza, Chikwawa, and Nsanje councils.

Phase 2 will occur on January 27 and 28, covering Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Likoma, Kasungu, Kasungu Municipality, Dowa, Mchinji, Ntcheu, Zomba, Zomba City, Blantyre, Blantyre City, Thyolo, and Luchenza councils.

Phase 3 will take place on February 2 and 3, covering Chitipa, Karonga, Karonga Town, Mzuzu City, Nkhotakota, Ntchisi, Salima, Dedza, Balaka, Machinga, Chiradzulu, Neno, Phalombe, and Mulanje councils.

With the supplementary registration targeting over 271,000 eligible individuals across 1,974 centers, Justice Mtalimanja urged citizens to take advantage of this opportunity to fulfill their democratic responsibility.
