DPP accuses MCP of exploiting Mutharika name for political gains

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has accused the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of manipulating the Mutharika name for political advantage.

This comes in the wake of reports about Samuel Thom Mutharika, who recently joined the MCP and allegedly claimed to be a member of the Mutharika family.

In a statement issued on January 14, 2025, the DPP labelled Thom as an impostor and a fraudster, asserting that he has no connection to the late President Bingu wa Mutharika or current party leader, Peter Mutharika.

The party described his claims as “identity fraud” and condemned his actions as deceitful and disrespectful to the Mutharika family name.

“At the age of 60, this man has suddenly emerged, falsely claiming to belong to the Mutharika family,” read the statement signed by Shadric Namalomba, the DPP’s National Publicity Secretary and Party Spokesperson.

“This is not the first time he has allowed himself to be used by politicians to tarnish the image of the Mutharikas.”

Namalomba warned the MCP to cease what he called manipulative tactics aimed at leveraging the Mutharika name.

MCP is yet to comment on the latest development.
