PAC criticizes Chakwera administration over corruption, governance concerns

The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has expressed disappointment with President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration over its perceived lack of decisive action on corruption allegations, which continue to undermine public trust in governance.

During a candid engagement with the President at Kamuzu Palace on Monday, PAC emphasized the need for urgent and bold measures to address these concerns.

“Corruption allegations have cast a dark shadow on the integrity of governance,” said PAC Chairperson Patrick Thawale. “

“The people of Malawi expect leadership that takes swift and firm action to restore confidence in public institutions.”

While acknowledging significant achievements in infrastructure development under Chakwera’s leadership, PAC noted that these strides have been overshadowed by economic challenges, particularly the rising cost of living.

The committee highlighted the growing burden on ordinary Malawians, who continue to face hardships despite promises of economic recovery.

“The cost of living has reached alarming levels, and citizens are struggling to make ends meet,” said Thawale.

“This requires urgent and strategic interventions to stabilize the economy and provide relief to vulnerable populations.”

PAC also raised concerns about inefficiencies within the civil service, pointing to low morale and declining service delivery as major issues.

The committee urged the government to implement reforms that would strengthen leadership and accountability across public institutions.

“The civil service is the backbone of governance, and its inefficiency is a barrier to progress. We need strong leadership to motivate civil servants and ensure they deliver services effectively to the people,” Thawale added.

PAC underscored the importance of ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process as the September 16 general elections draw closer.

Thawale stressed that this would be critical in maintaining public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.

“We call upon the government to prioritize preparations for the upcoming elections, ensuring that they are free, fair, and transparent. An inclusive process is essential for sustaining our democracy,” he said.
