PAC urges police, military to rebuild public trust
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has urged the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to restore public trust as a critical step toward effectively addressing political violence ahead of September’s general elections.
This call follows a joint statement by the two institutions condemning political parties, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and individuals inciting violence through inflammatory speech.
The statement warned that those found guilty of such acts would face the full force of the law.
The MPS and MDF have expressed concern over the escalating violence, worsened by the misuse of social media, which they say is fueling chaos as the country approaches the elections.
In their statement, the two security bodies issued a stern warning to perpetrators, emphasizing that acts of violence are punishable under the law.
They also assured Malawians that all necessary measures are being implemented to prevent political violence and ensure the safety of citizens.
Commenting on the matter, PAC spokesperson Gilford Matonga highlighted the importance of concluding investigations into previous cases of political violence.
He stressed that doing so would demonstrate the police’s commitment to tackling the issue seriously.
