Couple granted bail in child abuse case
The Magistrate’s Court in Blantyre has granted bail to McPherson Chitala and his wife, Linda, a Machinjiri-based couple accused of abusing their four-year-old daughter.
The couple was arrested late last year following allegations that they acted in a manner intended to cause grievous harm to the child.
Ahead of their prosecution, set to begin on January 28, the two re-applied for bail, a request opposed by the state.
Prosecutors argued that releasing the suspects posed a risk to their security and could lead to tampering with witnesses.
However, Magistrate Eupherasia Nazombe dismissed the objections, stating there was no evidence to suggest the suspects would face mob justice upon release.
In her ruling, Nazombe granted bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition against contacting the alleged survivor.
