Theft of 15 computers at Phalombe secondary school hinders digital learning progress

Nkuonera: This is a setback

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has reported the theft of 15 computers donated by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) to Phalombe Secondary School.

The computers were part of the Connect a School Project, an initiative aimed at promoting digital learning across the country.

Speaking on Thursday, the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mphatso Nkuonera, confirmed the incident, describing it as a major setback to the ministry’s efforts to transition from traditional manual methods to digital learning.

“This theft is a serious setback, as it undermines our progress toward embracing digital learning,” Nkuonera stated.

He noted that the incident comes at a critical time when the ministry is actively distributing tablets to primary schools through the six-year Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) program.

The initiative, targeting early grade learners in standards 1 to 4, is expected to conclude in 2029.

Nkuonera called on communities surrounding schools to help safeguard these valuable resources and emphasized the collective responsibility in ensuring the success of such projects.

He further disclosed that the theft has been reported to the Phalombe police, and investigations are underway. The ministry has assured the public of ongoing updates as new information becomes available.
