The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded nine road accidents during the 2025 New Year celebrations, a figure identical to that of 2024.

MPS’ Deputy Public Relations Officer, Harry Namwaza has confirmed the development.

According to Namwaza, the number of fatalities has doubled, rising from two in 2024 to four in 2025.

In addition, the number of individuals sustaining injuries during this period has also increased, climbing from 10 in 2024 to 15 in 2025.

Furthermore, 510 motorists were booked for speeding, 660 for exceeding passenger capacity, and 92 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additionally, 220 vehicles were flagged for being unroadworthy.

To mitigate road accidents, MPS deployed traffic police officers across major public roads to enforce traffic laws and regulations during the celebrations.

MPS has reiterated its call for all road users to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to ensure safety and prevent accidents.

The service emphasizes that cooperation from motorists and pedestrians alike is essential in reducing road-related injuries and fatalities.
