Former President Peter Mutharika has called on Malawians to embrace hope and resilience as the nation prepares for a new year.
In his end-of-year message, Mutharika reflected on the challenges of 2024, expressing empathy for the hardships faced by citizens.
“This is a moment to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the trials we have endured together,” he said while urging the public to carry forward a spirit of gratitude and determination for a brighter future.
Highlighting achievements within his party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Mutharika celebrated a successful convention that reaffirmed its vision for rebuilding Malawi.
As the DPP’s presidential candidate for the 2025 elections, he promised leadership that is “credible, capable, and compassionate.”
Mutharika emphasized his party’s commitment to addressing the country’s current struggles, including economic instability and widespread unemployment.
The former president painted a grim picture of life under the current administration, pointing to soaring prices, a failing agriculture sector, and youth unemployment.
“This is not the Malawi we built together,” he lamented. However, he reassured Malawians that the nation’s hardships are not its destiny, calling for collective efforts to restore stability and prosperity.
Mutharika also condemned what he described as threats to democracy, including selective justice and suppression of dissent.
He vowed that the DPP would protect freedoms and uphold the rule of law, reiterating the party’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent election in 2025.
Reflecting on the loss of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and others in a tragic accident, he urged unity and resilience, honoring their legacy.
As Malawi faces challenges such as delayed rains and food insecurity, Mutharika called for faith and action.
He encouraged citizens to register to vote in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that their participation is vital for change.
