Gilmo: The dynamo behind Malawi’s cinematic renaissance

Gilmo (In red golf-shirt): As a filmmaker, I know how difficult it can be to access resources

Malawi’s film industry is on the cusp of a revolution, and Gilbert Moyo is the visionary creative who is poised to take the reins.

With a career spanning over a decade, Gilmo – as he is fondly known – has established himself as a respected writer, producer, and lecturer whose instrumental role in shaping the industry cannot be overemphasized.

As a child, Gilmo used to watch films in the shanty, often crowded video shows in Lilongwe’s Mchesi township every day after school. He also made sure not to miss his mother’s masterly delivery of folktales.

These early experiences sparked a passion for storytelling that would stay with him throughout his life. As he grew older, Gilmo – who unsurprisingly performed drama at secondary school and the university – became increasingly fascinated with the power of film to inspire and bring about social change.

It was, therefore, only normal that after completing his studies, Moyo began his career in the film industry, working on a range of productions that tackled pressing social issues. All his films have since been met with critical acclaim, and he has established himself as a respected voice in the industry.

But Gilmo’s impact goes beyond his own productions. As a lecturer at the Malawi Institute of Journalism, he continues to inspire a new generation of creative writers. Meanwhile, his passion for storytelling and his commitment to using film as a tool for social change have made him a beloved figure in the industry.

Now, Gilbert Moyo is set to take on a new challenge as he contests for the vice president position of the Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) with a manifesto that is built around six key pillars, each designed to address a specific challenge facing the industry.

At the heart of his vision is Kanema House, a proposed dedicated office space for FAMA – a vibrant hub that will serve as a one-stop center for filmmakers, providing access to resources, training, and networking opportunities.

“Kanema House will be a game-changer for our industry,” Moyo explains. “It will provide a platform for filmmakers to connect, collaborate, and share ideas. It will also serve as a symbol of our industry’s growth and development; providing a strong voice for advocacy and representation.”

Top among a range of benefits that Kanema House will offer to filmmakers include: access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, training and capacity-building programs for skills and knowledge enhancement, as well as networking opportunities with other filmmakers, producers, and industry experts.

The hub will also act as a platform for showcasing the creatives’ works and for receiving feedback from peers and industry experts.

It will also help the filmmakers have access to funding opportunities and resources to support their projects.

“Kanema House will be a place where filmmakers can come together, share their ideas, and learn from each other,” Moyo says. “It will be a hub for creativity, innovation, and excellence in filmmaking.”

Gilmo’s commitment to the film industry is unwavering. He believes that storytelling has the power to bring about change and to inspire and he is determined to use his skills and experience to help shape the future of Malawi’s film industry.

“As a filmmaker, I know how difficult it can be to access resources, funding, and support,” he says. “But with Kanema House, we will have a dedicated space where filmmakers can come together, share their ideas, and receive the support they need to succeed.”

As the 5 January 2025 FAMA elections approach, one thing is clear: Gilbert Moyo a.k.a Gilmo is a worthwhile candidate for the grouping’s vice presidency. His vision, his passion, and his commitment to the industry make him an ideal leader.

The future of Malawi’s film industry is bright, and with Gilmo at the helm, it is set to become even brighter.
