Death Toll in South Korea Plane Crash Rises to 122

The death toll from the tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport in South Korea has climbed to 122, according to local fire and rescue officials.

The incident involved a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, which skidded off the runway and burst into flames during landing on Sunday.

The aircraft, carrying 181 people on board, including 175 passengers and six crew members, was returning from Bangkok, Thailand.

Preliminary investigations suggest a combination of adverse weather conditions and a suspected bird strike caused a landing gear malfunction, leading to the crash, DW reports.

According to Reuters, the plane collided with a wall before catching fire, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving 32 fire engines and dozens of firefighters. The rescue operation has so far recovered 122 bodies, with the remaining survivors receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Jeju Air has expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and assured full cooperation with authorities to determine the exact cause of the crash.
