Police and traditional leaders in Karonga District have joined hands to address acts of lawbreaking during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Karonga Police Officer-in-Charge Kelvin Mulezo said in an interview that police officers are already stationed in all strategic and hotspot areas to ensure security is not compromised.

“We know that this is a time when many people are reckless and take advantage of unguarded homes and properties. Therefore, we want to assure residents that police officers will act on such disgruntled individuals.

Officers are conducting patrols and checking on road users breaking traffic rules such as overspeeding. This includes both taxi drivers and motorbike operators. We also remind parents to ensure their houses are well locked and left under the care of someone before they leave for entertainment places,” Mulezo explained.

Speaking on behalf of Principal Group Village Head Katolora, Ellen Mwasangwale said they have a committee that oversees the behavior of young people found in entertainment places along the lake.

He said if such individuals are found engaging in undesirable acts, they will be brought to book and pay a K50,000 fine.

Concurring with Mwasangwale, the District Youth Officer for Karonga, Lapken Liwago, urged youths to realize that the festivities are short-lived and should be enjoyed responsibly.

He advised them to refrain from practices that could lead to trouble, such as unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and crimes, which could cause regret and jeopardize their future.
