Calls intensify for DPP to distance itself from violent remarks

Accused of making fueling violence, Musowa

Pressure is piling on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to openly distance itself from violent remarks made by one of its members, Victor Musowa.

He is alleged to have urged people to prevent MCP followers and officials from holding rallies in Blantyre’s Ndirande Township.

In a statement, DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhitho called on its members to practice issue-based campaigning, but the party has not openly distanced itself, apologized, or condemned the remarks made by Musowa.

“Reject any form of violence or intimidation, and do not be swayed by the actions of overzealous, panga-wielding MCP cadres. Instead, let us champion the values of peace and unity. By doing so, we reinforce Malawians’ trust in the DPP as their best choice for a better future,” said Mukhitho.

Commenting on the issue, George Phiri, a political commentator, stressed the need for such acts not to be tolerated.

“Any political party member should use every opportunity they have to promote peace ahead of the 2025 polls rather than resort to hate speech if Malawi is to have free and fair elections in 2025.”
