The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has reported that the death toll from the effects of Moderate Tropical Storm Chido has risen from two to seven.

The fatalities include three deaths in Salima, and one death each in Kasungu, Machinga, Blantyre, and Lilongwe Districts.

In its latest update, DoDMA disclosed that 7,721 households, accounting for approximately 34,741 people, have been affected by the storm across several districts, including Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, and Zomba, among others.

“The storm has also caused 16 injuries and varying degrees of damage in the impacted areas,” says DoDMA spokesperson, Chipiliro Khamula.

The department, in collaboration with humanitarian partners and local councils, has been providing relief assistance to affected households.

Efforts have included the deployment of search and rescue teams, which have now been decommissioned following confirmation from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services that the storm has exited the country and poses no further threat.

DoDMA has expressed its gratitude to all partners, organizations, and individuals who contributed to preparatory and response actions.

It assures the public of continued updates on any developments related to the aftermath of Tropical Storm Chido.
