Govt warns of landslide risks amid heavy rains
The Ministry of Mining, through the Geological Survey Department, has issued a warning about the potential for landslides during the ongoing 2024/25 rainfall season.
This alert comes as Tropical Cyclone Chido impacts Malawi. Heavy and prolonged rainfall is predicted to destabilize slopes and fragile terrain, particularly in the southern region.
According to the ministry, landslides—a dangerous downslope movement of rocks, debris, and soil—are likely to occur in unstable slopes and areas with weak infrastructure.
The affected districts include Blantyre, Phalombe, Mulanje, Chiradzulu, Zomba, and Mangochi, which are known for their hilly environments.
The department is in a statement urging communities in these areas to relocate to safer zones immediately if rainfall persists to protect lives and property.
The Geological Survey Department’s recent assessments indicate that regions affected by last year’s Tropical Cyclone Freddy remain highly vulnerable.
The ministry further says it is closely monitoring the situation and has pledged to provide technical support and updates as conditions evolve.
