Food insecurity hits Mchinji learners hard

Some of the learners during the dialogue

A recent nutrition dialogue at Waliranji Primary School, hosted by World Vision Malawi (WVM) as part of the ‘ENOUGH’ campaign, reveals that lack of essential food items in learners’ households significantly impairs their academic performance.

Blessings Daimon, a Standard 7 learner, shared that often, students attend school without eating, leading to drowsiness during classes.

Daimon believes government can do more by investing in school feeding programs.

One of the parents who participated in the dialogue, Ellita Chilinde, acknowledged that drunkenness among parents contributes to neglecting children’s nutrition.

“Many parents prioritize beer over their children’s well-being,” Chilinde said.

Mchinji District Programs Manager for WVM, Mereena John, highlighted that the recent El-Nino has impacted farmers’ crops, exacerbating nutrition constraints.

John adds that the dialogue has unearthed shared concerns between parents and children, hoping to collectively address challenges faced.

The dialogue aims to engage policymakers and ensure effective solutions to hunger and malnutrition among children.

ENOUGH campaign is a global advocacy initiative aimed at ending hunger and malnutrition in children, implemented by World Vision Malawi in all its program areas.
