NWRA urges Chikwawa to prepare for flood risks
The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has urged authorities in Chikwawa District to take proactive measures in warning communities at risk of flooding.
The call was made during a full council meeting, where NWRA Chief Executive Officer Dwight Kambuku presented reports from the Meteorological Services and the Department of Climate Change.
According to the reports, Malawi is expected to receive higher-than-normal rainfall this year, leading to increased water levels and potential flooding.
“The flooding incidents that we will experience are because there will be normal to above-normal water levels,” said Kambuku.
In response, Chikwawa District Commissioner Nardie Kamba emphasized the district’s efforts to collaborate with various committees and stakeholders to raise awareness about the risk of flooding.
“I am glad that the NWRA has involved chiefs, councilors, Traditional Authorities (TAs), and other stakeholders to help sensitize the public about the potential dangers of high water levels,” Kamba said.
He also highlighted plans to work with local chiefs and other community leaders to encourage people living in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations.
“I will work with chiefs and other stakeholders to warn people living in low-lying areas to relocate to places where their lives will be safe from floods,” Kamba added.
Additionally, NWRA has communicated with local chiefs and stakeholders about its mandate on the regulation of water abstraction for domestic use, including the licensing of boreholes and the use of river water by other companies.
