The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has underscored the pivotal role media practitioners play in educating the public about gaming and lotteries in the country.

Through a collaborative interface meeting held in Blantyre, MAGLA sought to enhance the media’s understanding of its mandate and the industry’s contributions to national development.

MAGLA’s Director General, Rachel Majiga, highlighted the critical role of journalists in fostering a well-informed public.

“Journalists have a unique platform to shape perceptions and guide responsible participation in gaming and lotteries. By focusing on positive aspects, they can help society better appreciate the benefits of this industry,” she said.

Majiga emphasized the importance of viewing gambling as a form of recreation and entertainment, rather than a source of employment or financial dependency.

“Unrealistic expectations from gaming activities can lead to harmful consequences. Our message is clear—engage responsibly and enjoy gaming as a leisure activity,” she cautioned.

Chibwana: We need collaboration

The meeting also provided a platform for the media to share their perspectives. Emmanuel Chibwana, General Secretary of the Southern Region Press Club, acknowledged the importance of collaboration between MAGLA and journalists.

“Equipping media practitioners with accurate knowledge about gaming and lotteries is key to enhancing responsible reporting and addressing misconceptions in society,” Chibwana stated.

MAGLA, established by an act of Parliament, is mandated with licensing and regulating gaming and lottery activities in Malawi.

Its efforts to engage the media reflect a commitment to transparency and public education.

The interface meeting concluded with a shared resolve to use media as a tool for promoting responsible gaming and lotteries while ensuring that the public is informed about the opportunities and risks associated with such activities.
