CSEC calls for greater investment in education amidst fiscal challenges
The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has emphasized on the need to ensure that education remains a top priority despite fiscal constraints facing Malawi, particularly in the 2024-25 Revised Budget.
According to CSEC executive director Benedicto Kondowe, the authorities must among others promote effective utilization of the budget allocation, fiscal discipline, and a concrete strategy to address the challenges faced by the education sector.
He further highlighted that all children should have access to quality education, which will empower them to contribute to the country’s development.
“Education is a fundamental human right and the foundation for socio-economic development. We urge the government to reflect this priority by allocating sufficient resources to ensure that all children have access to quality, accessible, and equitable education,” said Kondowe.
His call for prioritizing education comes after the Ministry of Finance presented the proposed austerity mid-year budget review statement to Parliament last week.
Kondowe urged the government to allocate adequate funds to the education sector in the 2024/2025 national budget.
The Coalition commended the government’s focus on addressing critical challenges within the education sector, particularly the allocation for infrastructure improvements.
Kondowe acknowledged the importance of modernizing education systems to bridge the gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and he welcomed the increased funding for marginalized and vulnerable communities.
“The expansion of digital learning resources is a positive move towards addressing the disparities in education access, especially in remote areas,” he noted.
