Malawi marks international anti-corruption day with nationwide activities
Malawi is gearing up to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, 2024, under the theme, “Reporting Corruption: A Duty for All.”
This theme aligns with the global focus set by the United Nations, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” emphasizing the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in combating corruption.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other collaborators, has organized a series of events to engage citizens and raise awareness about the negative effects of corruption.
The activities aim to inspire action and promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The commemoration began on November 26 with a student dialogue involving Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) and Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST).
The discussion centered on how social media can either enhance or undermine efforts to combat corruption.
According to ACB Principal Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala, the event highlighted the vital role of youth in shaping an integrity-driven future.
In the lead-up to December 9, the ACB will conduct Corporate Social Responsibility activities at Salima District Hospital on December 7.
This will be followed by a big walk on December 8 in Salima Boma, taking anti-corruption messages directly to the community.
The main event will take place on December 9 at Kaphatenga Ground in Salima.
The program includes entertainment such as comedy and traditional dances, along with speeches from prominent dignitaries.
Ndala emphasized the importance of citizen participation, stating, “The fight against corruption requires all of us. These activities are an opportunity for everyone to join hands and commit to a corruption-free Malawi.”
Citizens across the country are encouraged to attend the events and contribute to the movement for a transparent and corruption-free society.
