Bankers lift 2024 Super League crown
Lilongwe-based Silver Strikers FC have officially been crowned TNM Super League Champions for a record ninth time following an impressive 2024 season.
The Bankers ended their season with 67 points which secured the top spot with a record 19 wins and 10 draws and a late loss to now relegated FOMO FC.
Silver Strikers mentor Peter Mponda looked overwhelmed at the end of their final game: “We were looking for such a victory to cap off an impressive season, now it’s done”
Their runners-up, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC, registered 17 wins and 7 draws including 6 losses that left them behind the Central Bankers with 58 points.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets came third with 55 points after what critics labelled a lucklusture season for last years history quarldruple winners.
Bullets lost 3 crucial games that denied them a chance to contend for this year’s crown. But on a positive note, they won 14 games and drew13 matches over the season.
Kalisto Pasuwa is Bullets mentor. He blames fatigue as one of the contributing factors that corrupted his side from retaining the silverware.
“Remember we had to participate in a number of other cup competitions including the CAF champions league. The players picked up injuries while pursuing chances of retaining the championship, we’re coming back next season” Pasuwa said.
In other matches played over the weekend, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets edged Kamuzu Barracks 1-0, courtesy of Stanley Billiat’s 8th-minute strike.
Fomo FC and Karonga United played out a goalless draw, while Bangwe ALL Stars suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Creck SC. Patrick Phiri scored a consolation goal for Bangwe in the 90th minute.
Mighty Tigers secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Civil Service United, thanks to Precious Chipungu’s 44th-minute goal.
Silver Strikers, meanwhile, thrashed Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos 5-2, with Chimwemwe Idana, Gift Chunga, Brave, Dancuin Nyoni, and Zebron Kalima all getting on the scoresheet.
Mafco FC suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mzuzu City Hammers, while Moyale FC lost 2-1 to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
In other matches, Baka City fell 3-1 to Chitipa United, and Mighty Tigers secured a 1-0 victory over Civil Service United.
League winners, Winners Silver Strikers pocket K100,000,000 while the runners-up Wanderers walk out with K40,000,000.
Finally, third Placed Bullets get K30,000,000 as part of the K500, 000, 000 prize money.
