DPP leads Afrobarometer poll ahead of 2025 elections

If Malawi’s presidential election had been held in August this year, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would have likely emerged victorious, according to the latest Afrobarometer survey.

The survey done in collaboration with the University of Malawi (UNIMA)’s Centre for Social Research, indicates that 43% of respondents would have cast their vote for the DPP, placing the party ahead of its closest competitor, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which garnered 29% of potential support.

Apart from DPP and MCP, the data further highlights that other political parties, including the UTM and the United Democratic Front (UDF), remain on the margins of political influence, with only 7% and 4% of respondents, respectively, expressing support for these parties.

Despite this, a notable 14% of respondents either refused to disclose their preferred candidate or stated they were undecided, suggesting that a significant segment of the electorate remains up for grabs, potentially influencing outcomes as the 2025 elections draw nearer.

Public dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of economic challenges and the overall performance of the president has likely fueled the DPP’s popularity, according to the survey.

Meanwhile, the survey indicates high voter intention for the 2025 general elections.
