Umodzi Party commends president Chakwera’s national address
The Umodzi Party has praised President Lazarus Chakwera for what it terms as an insightful national address which was delivered on November 27, 2024.
In a statement issued after the address President of the Umodzi Party Thomas Wezzie Kaumba, commended the President’s leadership in responding to the country’s pressing issues.
“The address delivered by president Chakwera is a reflection of the strong leadership we need in these trying times. It demonstrates not only his understanding of the immense challenges facing the nation but also his commitment to addressing them with clarity and a sense of responsibility,” Kaumba said.
Kaumba highlighted the President’s recognition of the triple crisis—hunger, fuel shortages, and political instability—and the steps outlined to tackle each issue.
“As a nation, we must acknowledge the gravity of these challenges, and we are pleased that the President’s speech reflected the urgency of finding solutions.
The strategic engagement with international partners to address the humanitarian crisis caused by drought is particularly commendable. It’s clear that the President is focused on averting a crisis and securing vital support for the millions of Malawians suffering from food insecurity” he said.
The Party also expressed its solidarity with the government in ensuring that all citizens have access to food and called on all stakeholders to support the efforts to secure national food security.
Kaumba said, “We stand in solidarity with the government in its mission to ensure that no Malawian is left behind in this critical time. We call on all citizens, civil society organizations, and private sector actors to contribute to efforts aimed at tackling hunger and ensuring food security for the nation.”
In addition to the urgent need for food security, the Umodzi Party also praised the President’s proposal to shift Malawi’s fuel procurement system to a Government-to-Government model, aimed at addressing the country’s chronic fuel shortages.
The Umodzi Party also joined the President in calling for peaceful political participation, particularly in the face of rising tensions and recent outbreaks of violence. Kaumba condemned the violence and emphasized the importance of respecting the constitutional rights of all Malawians.
However, while the Umodzi Party supported the President’s initiatives, it expressed concern over unwarranted criticism and baseless attacks aimed at undermining the government’s efforts.
In conclusion, the Party president reiterated its full support for the President’s leadership and the steps being taken to address the nation’s crises and appealed to all Malawians to rally behind the government in a unified effort to overcome the current challenges.
