MEC registers over 2.4 million people in phase II of voters’ registration
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that a total of 2,422,595 voters have been registered during Phase II of the voter registration process.
Of this total, 1,079,523 are male, representing 45%, and 1,343,072 are female, accounting for 55%.
Comparing these figures with the projected population for 2025, which stands at 3,963,148 individuals aged 18 and above, the registered voters in Phase II represent 61% of the anticipated eligible population.
MEC Chief Elections Officer, Andrew Mpesi highlighted that 57% of the projected male population and 65% of the projected female population have registered.
The registration process covered 14 councils, including Blantyre, Kasungu, Dowa, Thyolo, and Zomba. The highest registration percentage was noted in Kasungu, which recorded 344,448 registered voters, representing 71.1% of its projected eligible population.
In a statement, Mpesi emphasized that the figures are preliminary, as data cleaning is ongoing to address potential duplicate registrations.
“The public must exercise caution in using these figures. Adjustments may be made once the data cleaning process is finalized,” he said.
The MEC assured that the cleaned and finalized data would be made available on its official website in the coming days.
