Chakwera urges urgent action for disability-friendly public spaces

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called for immediate efforts to make public spaces in Malawi inclusive for persons with disabilities.

Speaking today during the inauguration of the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) Flag Week at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chakwera stressed the need for urgent action.

“It is time for all public and private sectors to take stock of everything that is not inclusive in their institutions and take action,” said Chakwera.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in all public buildings, including schools and hospitals, by 2030.

He also emphasized that inclusivity is not just a necessity but a moral obligation.

The event also marked a significant transition from the Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA) to the more inclusive Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA).

Minister of Gender Jean Sendeza highlighted the administration’s progress, pointing to the enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Act 2024 as a key milestone.

“This Act is a testament to President Chakwera’s dedication to advancing the rights of people with disabilities,” said Sendeza.

MACODA Board Chairperson Alex Dzikambani echoed the President’s sentiments, noting that despite some progress, persons with disabilities in Malawi still face significant challenges.

“Many persons with disabilities continue to face barriers, including limited access to education and employment opportunities.”

“While MACODA is mandated to promote and protect their rights, additional support is crucial for the council to fulfill its expanded responsibilities,” explained Dzikambani.

This year’s MACODA Flag Week is being commemorated under the theme: “Empowering Disability Rights: Paving the Way for an Inclusive Malawi Towards Malawi 2063.”
