NPP urges MEC, NRB to address voter registration challenges

The National Patriotic Party (NPP) has joined other opposition parties in urging the government, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), and the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to resolve the anomalies encountered during the first and second phases of the voter registration exercise before initiating the third phase.
According to NPP Publicity Secretary Shola Kawonga, it is surprising that many people have yet to register. Yet, MEC plans to proceed with the next phase without addressing the challenges faced in previous phases.
“We are all aware of the court ruling that indicated that an NRB officer should be present at every registration center, allowing all eligible Malawians to register and exercise their right to vote in the forthcoming general elections. However, this ruling was disregarded in many areas, raising concerns about whether the government is working to manipulate election results,” Kawonga stated.
Kawonga further questioned the ruling party’s intentions, saying, “If the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) believes it has delivered during its four years in government, why is it difficult to allow every eligible Malawian to exercise their right to vote? This would help avoid conflicts in the country.”
He also called on government officials to set aside their pride and engage former heads of state and other stakeholders to address critical challenges such as fuel shortages and economic hardships, to ease the burden on Malawians.
