Chawinga sisters nominated for CAF player of the year accolade

Malawi’s senior women’s football team forwards Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga have been nominated for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year crown.

The Confederation of African Football announced the list ahead of the 2024 awards ceremony to be held on 16 December in Marrakech, Morocco.

According to CAF officials, the winners of each category will be determined through votes from a diverse panel, including the CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, and the Head Coaches among others.

Temwa who  plays for Kansas City in the US and Tabitha who plays for Olympic Lyon in France join Zambians Barbara Banda and Racheal Kundananji; South Africans Jermaine Seoposenwe and Thembi Kgatlana from the COSAFA

The recognition of the best coach in the women’s football will also be recognised at the glittering ceremony evening.

According to the football continental football governing body’s website, the list of nominees includes young and emerging African women’s football coaches such as Mildred Cheche (Kenya) who qualified the Kenyan U-17 national team to its first ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The list also included as well Thinasonke Mbuli who guided UWC to a historic qualification to the CAF Women’s Champions League amongst others.
