ACB arrests nine in anti-corruption drive

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested nine individuals in connection with separate corruption cases in Phalombe and Mangochi districts.
In Phalombe, six suspects were apprehended on November 15, 2024, over irregularities in the 2022 recruitment of health workers at the District Council whereas in Mangochi, the suspects are accused of extorting money for beneficiaries Social Cash Transfer.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Egritta Ndala identified one of the Phalombe accused persons as George Ramundi, who allegedly solicited K200, 000 to influence the hiring of a hospital attendant.
According to Ndala, the other five people are accused of presenting falsified academic documents during interviews for various positions.
In Mangochi, she revealed that three individuals, Muhammad Danger, Edward Black, and Manesi Jeke, were arrested over allegations of extorting money from 72 beneficiaries of the Mtukula Pakhomo social support program under Traditional Authority Katuli.
All nine suspects have since pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.
The public relations officer has since said trials are expected to commence in the coming weeks.
