Karate team impresses MNCS
The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) says the Karate team’s performance in two of their recent international tournaments signaled that they are on track.
The Malawi Karate Federation recently participated in the Lusaka Open Championship in Zambia followed by the Kurai Open Championship in Zimbabwe.
Their impressive victories saw the team bag 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals in total after performing in Zambia where they won 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
While their outstanding performance in Zimbabwe earned them 2 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze medals to their tally.
According to the council’s spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa, the competitions were meant to serve as preparations for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games.
“This is the first time for the Malawi Karate Federation to take part in international games such as these and we must say they have had an impressive run. We have full confidence that they will do well at the Youth Games,” Ntulumbwa highlighted.
These back-to-back tournaments—the Lusaka Open and the Kurai Open— serve as critical preparations for the, scheduled for June next year in Namibia.
Lusaka event was held on November 9 in the Zambian capital as well as the Kurai tournament was held in Harare from November 16–17.
A delegation of 12 members, comprising three male junior karatekas, four female karatekas, and five officials, represented Malawi at these tournaments.
The team arrived in the country on Tuesday evening, 19 November to continue their preparations for the games
