FPAM urges youths to embrace use of contraceptives for better SRHR
The Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) has urged young people to utilize available contraceptive measures to prevent unintended pregnancies.
This call was made during an open day event held in Ntcheu, which featured free access to sexual and reproductive health services, including a mobile outreach clinic to ensure accessibility.
Speaking during the event, FPAM’s Social Behavior Change and Communication Lead, Andrew Mkandawire, emphasized the association’s commitment to empowering youths to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
“We aim to create a safe environment where young people can access services without stigma or judgment. Contraceptives are not just about preventing pregnancies; they are about enabling young people to pursue their dreams without unnecessary disruptions,“ said Mkandawire.
The initiative also highlighted the need for equitable decision-making between girls and boys regarding contraceptive use and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR).
Ntcheu Youth-Friendly Health Coordinator, Christopher Mulolo, called for enhanced information-sharing efforts to ensure youths fully understand their options.
“Young people need diversified and clear information on contraceptives. It’s not just about availability; it’s about ensuring they feel confident and knowledgeable enough to make the best choices for themselves,” said Mulolo.
One of the attendees, Ruth Changa, shared her experience with contraceptives, stressing their role in enabling young people to take control of their futures.
“I use contraceptives despite facing backlash from the community that thinks I will be unable to have children in the future. They give me freedom,” said Changa.
