PETRA condemns political violence in Lilongwe
The People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) has condemned the violent incidents that occurred in Lilongwe on November 13, 2024, which it described as a threat to Malawi’s peace and democracy.
The violence, characterized by individuals wielding panga knives, disrupted the tranquility in areas around the Old Town’s National Bank and the Lilongwe Community Ground.
In a statement signed by PETRA’s Communications Director, Damister Chimombo, the party attributed the unrest to a counter-demonstration against a planned protest by opposition parties demanding the resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson.
The demonstration was reportedly postponed following communication from the Lilongwe District Chief Executive.
“This type of behavior is a recipe for disaster, particularly as we approach the 2025 general elections,” said Chimombo.
He urged Malawians across the political divide to condemn such acts of lawlessness.
PETRA called on law enforcement agencies to act decisively in curbing the behavior, emphasizing that failure to do so could lead to further unrest, destruction of property, injuries, and even loss of lives.
The party stressed the importance of maintaining peace and lawfulness as a foundation for free and fair elections.
Chimombo also appealed to law enforcement officers to remain impartial, investigate the violence thoroughly, and bring perpetrators to justice.
“We expect that law enforcement agents will not allow themselves to serve narrow and partisan interests,” he stated.
The party encouraged Malawians to safeguard the nation’s hard-won freedoms and adhere to principles of mutual respect.
