AfCHPR dismisses Chanthunya’s appeal for compensation, release
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) in Arusha, Tanzania, has dismissed a case filed by Malawian convict, Misozi Chanthunya.
Chanthunya, sentenced to life in prison in 2020 for the murder of his Zimbabwean girlfriend, Linda Gasa, sought declarations from the Court that his rights to a fair trial had been violated.
He also requested compensation and release from prison.
The ruling, delivered this morning by a 10-judge panel, concluded that the Malawi government did not breach Chanthunya’s fair trial rights.
Lady Justice Tujilane Chizumila, a Malawian judge, recused herself from the judgment process.
Representing the Malawi government were lawyers Neverson Chisiza and Francis MacJessie from the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Gasa’s murder, which took place in 2010, sparked widespread attention, eventually leading to Chanthunya’s conviction a decade later.
