MEC announces candidates nomination fees
Presidential candidates are now required to pay K10 million as a nomination fee, according to a recent announcement by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
A notice issued by MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja stated that “the fee applies to all candidates running for the position.”
Mtalimanja also disclosed that parliamentary candidates will face different fees: “Male candidates are required to pay K2.5 million, while female and youth candidates, as well as people with disabilities, will pay K1,250,000.”
For local government elections, male candidates will need to pay K200,000, whereas female and youth candidates, along with people with disabilities, will pay K100,000.
The Commission emphasized that “the money is non-refundable,” citing sections 29(1) and 40(1) of the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections Act.
