Man fined for assaulting a filling station security guard

The Midima First Grade Magistrate Court has fined 35-year-old Mafano Mawelenga K50,000 or a year in jail after he was convicted of assaulting a security guard at Petroda Filling Station in Limbe.

Limbe Police spokesperson Aubrey Singanyama confirmed that the incident took place on October 27 as Mawelenga tried to cut in line when a fuel tanker arrived.

According to Singanyama, the security guard on duty attempted to maintain order, asking Mawelenga and his friends to wait their turn.

“Mawelenga reacted by taking a small axe from his vehicle and injuring the guard on his right hand,” explained Singanyama, adding that Mawelenga was immediately restrained by other security guards and handed over to Limbe Police.

In court, State Prosecutor Sergeant Matthews Jumbe pushed for a harsher penalty to serve as a deterrent for similar behavior.

“We urged the court for a stiffer punishment due to the serious nature of the offense,” Jumbe stated. Mawelenga, however, requested leniency, citing that he looks after his elderly mother.

Passing the sentence, Magistrate Lameck Mkwapatila ordered Mawelenga to pay a K50,000 fine or serve a one-year jail term if unable to pay.
