MEC extends voter registration to reach all eligible voters
Electoral authorities are announcing the extension of the voter registration exercise after the third phase to capture all eligible voters.
It follows a 25 October High Court ruling that ordered the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to accommodate all individuals who want to get the national ID crucial for the voter registration exercise.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja hopes that the NRB will have taken appropriate steps to provide registration services in all designated centers by the end of the third phase.
Mtalimanja has since vowed to ensure that all eligible voters who meet the set registration criteria are allowed to register ahead of next year’s polls.
The first phase of the voter registration winds up today with the second phase set to run from 9 to 22 November in 14 local councils.
MEC will then conduct the third phase of the exercise from 28 November to 11 December in eight councils.
