CFTC questions soaring fertilizer costs in Malawi
Malawi’s fair trading regulators have asked local fertilizer suppliers to explain why prices in the country are significantly higher than in neighboring countries.
This call follows a study by COMESA and the University of Johannesburg, which found that Malawi ranks among the countries with the most expensive fertilizer.
Lloyds Nkhoma, Executive Director of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC), expressed concern that the price gap between Malawi and neighboring nations—despite shared global suppliers—could indicate systematic exploitation.
“This disparity raises questions about pricing practices,” he stated.
Recently, parliament noted that the current prices of K95,000 to K100,000 for a 50-kilogram bag appear inconsistent with the actual landing costs and related expenses.
