MERA issues stern warning to black market fuel dealers

Kachaje: Dealers are exploiting the public

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer, Henry Kachaje has issued a sharp warning to black-market fuel dealers, whom he claims are worsening the ongoing fuel crisis in Malawi.

Speaking at a press briefing today, Kachaje called out the illegal dealers for allegedly hoarding fuel driving up prices, and aggravating the scarcity that has recently affected the nation.

“These dealers are exploiting the public and undermining efforts to stabilize fuel availability,” he stated.

Kachaje stated that any individual or business participating in black-market activities will face prosecution.

“Let this serve as a warning. If you are caught diverting fuel supplies or selling at illegal prices, we will hold you accountable under the law,” he said, signaling MERA’s commitment to tackling illegal practices that put further strain on citizens and the economy.

Kachaje also urged filling stations with available fuel to extend their operating hours to accommodate the high demand.

This measure, he explained, would help reduce the lengthy queues seen across the country as citizens scramble to secure fuel.

MERA has also ramped up its monitoring efforts, with increased inspections planned at fuel stations to deter and detect any attempts at stockpiling or price manipulation.

Kachaje reaffirmed MERA’s dedication to working closely with suppliers and authorities to bring the situation under control and ensure fair access to fuel.

With fuel supplies tight, Kachaje called on the public to report any black-market dealings they encounter, emphasizing that cooperation is essential to restoring stability. As the scarcity continues, he assured Malawians that MERA will keep them informed through regular updates as the agency works to resolve the crisis.
