Mtumbuka, Kabambe submit their nominations

UTM presidential aspirants Matthews Mtumbuka and Dalitso Kabambe submitted their nominations on Wednesday, both emphasizing the continuation of their former leader, the late Saulos Chilima’s vision.

Mtumbuka said Malawians are tired of poverty and need new faces like him to run the government, rather than recycled politicians who have failed to deliver.

“When the late Chilima was leaving Airtel, he told me that Malawi needs someone with the skills to lead a company and use that expertise to turn the country around. That is what I have come to do, as I possess CEO leadership skills after heading both local and international companies,” Mtumbuka said.

He added, “Most youths do not take part in elections as they feel they are not represented. I am youthful, under 50, with a corruption-free record, and capable of turning things around in Malawi.”

Mtumbuka pledged to make UTM forward-thinking, vibrant, and united. He urged members not to vote based on handouts but rather on candidates’ capabilities and ideologies.

On his part, Dalitso Kabambe said the country’s economy is in a dire state, with unemployment and poverty levels rising.

“The entire macroeconomy has been paralyzed. Debts have risen to K15 trillion, yet there’s no visible impact from this money. Malawians are looking for a government that can solve their problems, and that government is UTM,” he stated.

Kabambe added, “I can tell you with authority—I know the fiscal framework the government is operating under, and I know what a better fiscal framework should look like. What is happening is completely wrong. I understand the right exchange rate policy that could be implemented, but what is happening is wrong. I know the proper development framework a country can use to develop, and what is happening is wrong.”

He accused the current government of being clueless, saying, “They are playing like a child cutting themselves and bleeding, and all Malawians are bleeding from poverty, joblessness, and underdevelopment.”

UTM is expected to hold its elective conference on November 17, 2024, with about six candidates vying for the presidential position.
