Nsanje education stakeholders call for revision of school timetable

Some stakeholders in Nsanje have asked the Ministry of Education to consider revising the school timetable in light of the harsh weather affecting the district.

Chairperson of Nsanje Citizen Trust, Hastings Mapundi, told Capital FM that the climate shocks in the Shire Valley are negatively impacting the delivery of education.

“Revising the school timetable during this period of heatwaves is essential. Authorities should consider temporarily introducing morning and afternoon sessions so that all learners can access education at a favorable time,” said Mapundi.

He noted that extreme weather conditions have been one of the factors contributing to Nsanje’s low performance in national exams.

“In the morning, it’s a bit cooler, but the situation becomes critical in the afternoon when the sun is overhead. Revising the timetable would allow all learners to access education at a more conducive time,” he added.

Recently, Nsanje has been experiencing high temperatures, with extremes surpassing 40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is yet to respond to the stakeholders’ appeal.
